As the marketing director, among other things, for an L.A. based video production company, one of my roles is networking and business development. This includes meeting with the CEOs/COOs/owners of all types and sizes of businesses from large multi-national corporations to local chains to little ‘mom and pop’ operations; people whose businesses are very diverse.

As different as each business is, they all have one thing in common: the desire, want and need for more business:

More clients.
More sales.
More customers.
More patients.

Corporate video starter guide

You want to harness the power of video marketing for your business, but you don’t know how to get started. Here is a step-by- step corporate video starter guide.

Ready to take the first few steps?:

Step 1: Determine the reason for the video

What is the specific goal of your corporate video? Why is it being made?

Not just ‘to get more business’, but the specific goal. For example, increase yearly sales by 25%? To gain ten new clients or customers per month? Increase goodwill toward your industry? Answering the ‘why’ question is a crucial first step which should be done before you call the film company

 

Step 2: Think about the video production budget

The price of a video of the CEO sitting in their office talking about the company will be considerably less than a lifestyle video of a multi-million dollar real estate listing with expensive cars, models, and drone footage. Be realistic. The former could be as low as a few hundred dollars; the latter as much as several thousand.

We tell our clients that they need to know in advance what they want before the cameras start to roll. The more changes the client makes once we have started, the more it is going to cost.

Step 3: Who is responsible for the video at your business or corporation?

For a small business or small corporation, this might be easy; one person runs everything, and it will be them. For example, we filmed a video of the showroom at a kitchen remodeling business, and we dealt with the president of the company.

For larger businesses and corporations, is Marketing or Sales or Public Relations department be responsible? Usually, it is whoever writes the check but not always. We filmed a video of the newly built North American offices of a multi-national corp. The builder hired us; we answered to the MNC’s designer and the builder paid us.

Step 4: What is the subject matter of the corporate video           

What are we filming? There have been times when we’ve spoken with a potential client and had no idea what they want because they had no idea what they want.

What will be the Subject Matter of your video? What is your vision? Do you even have a vision? If you need help articulating it, your videographers’ creative team (like ours) can help.

Will the video include people, i.e., an interview of the CEO or a client testimonial? Will it be to showcase a new product or new location? Will it be a video of a new product? A how-to video? A residential or commercial real estate listing? A before, during and after of a construction or remodeling project? A video about the company culture or a recruitment video? Or something entirely different?

Step 5: What will be done with the video when it is done

You need a plan of action for your video from idea to pre- production, filming, post production to finally getting your video in front of the target audience.

If it is a video for internal corporate use only, this is not an issue. But, what it is a real estate listing video or the launch of a new product video? Then it is crucial to get it in front of as many viewers as possible.
